Parsons Chain
Parsons chain was first manufactured in England in 1903. It was known for its high quality and outstanding metallurgical properties. Early in 2000 the labor costs to produce this chain in England became too high and Parsons Chain UK formed a partnership with a respected Chinese entity to pick up the ball.
Parsons Mining Chain is now exclusively manufactured in China for Ellton Longwall by the Zhanjiakou Chain Company, which is part of the China Mining Equipment Group (CME). Founded in 1958, Zhanjiakou is the leading manufacturer of mining chain and components for the Chinese Mining industry. China currently produces about 2.5 B tons of coal mostly by longwall mining, so its experience base is significant.
Zhanjiakou began working with the Parson Chain Company UK in 1995, and it eventually took over production for all Parsons Mining Chain. As a result, new improved manufacturing and heat treatment processes have been introduced. Recent investments in unique process equipment and quality management systems have enabled us to provide the high quality chain systems the worlds mining industry demands. An example of this quality is evident in the fact that there has not been a single Parsons Chain warranty claim since production started in China!

Parsons’ metallurgy is your key to better chain performance. longer life, and less downtime. |
In 2007 CME and Ellton Longwall added Parsons Mining Chain to its product catalogue including its patented Xtra chain with its higher tensile strength, longer fatigue life and increased toughness properties compared to DIN standard chain.
COR-X chain with a patented alloy steel material was developed to overcome the effects of even the most corrosive mining conditions. Unlike chain which is surface galvanised, COR-X chains properties are inherent in the whole link which means the effects will not wear off and will last the life of the Chain.
Established in 1997 in Australia, Ellton Longwall was formed as part of the Ellton Group of Companies to provide an integrated service in conveying, lifting and project management. The Ellton Group of companies now provides a larger more complete range of services into the Australian Mining Industry.
Ellton Longwall Pty Ltd is the sole and exclusive distributor for Parson Mining Chains and Chain Connectors in Australia and the USA. It is also the agent/distributor for China National Coal Mining Equipment Group in Australia. Mark Newton, Ellton Longwall Managing Director, has been working closely with Parsons Chain for many years. He worked with them before the Chinese became involved and then through the transition as the Parsons Chain manufacturing facility and its technology was transferred to China. As a result of this transition, Parsons Chain, previously used extensively in US longwall mines was not available for several years in the USA. Mark first reintroduced Parsons Chain to the Australian market where it has been used successfully by Centennial Coal’s Mandalong and Newstan mines, Anglo Coal’s Moranbah North mine, BHP’s Billiton and Appin mines, Kestrel Coal, and Xstrata’s Baal Bone mine. Parsons Chain is now available in the USA.

Parsons Chain USA
Now that the Parsons Chain business is again firmly established in Australia, Ellton Longwall, the exclusive Australian and USA distributors, are cranking up operations to make these products available to the mining and other industries in the USA. George Roman is heading up the US operations as Sales Manager and Agent for Ellton Longwall. George is a mining engineering graduate of the University of Illinois at Urbana. He has also done some post graduate work in structural engineering and qualified as a registered professional engineer. George worked as an UMWA miner at one of Freeman Coal’s underground mines in southern Illinois and did a 4-year stint as a mining engineer at the Truax-Traer then CONSOL surface mines at Fiatt, IL. He worked three-years with Paul Weir Company (now Weir International), and then moved to technical publishing and sales, first as an editor, then advertising salesman with
Coal Age,
World Coal, and then publisher with
World Mining and World Coal magazines. This plus George’s significant international experience having visited over 140 mines in North America, Europe, and Asia, plus having made over 50 trips to China working closely with the Ministry of Coal and Energy there to sell and transfer USA mining technology to China gives him good qualifications to represent Parsons Chain in the United States.
You may contact George directly at his Las Vegas office by calling 1(702) 515-7247 or on his cell at 1(702)280-1158 or by email at George@ParsonsChainUSA.com.

Why buy mining products from China? For one thing, the Chinese coal mining industry is more than twice the size of the USA coal industry. Furthermore, almost 100% of their coal mines are underground operations and most of those are longwall mines. That equates to 4 times the production in longwall mining, not to mention the experience that goes with it. The Chinese manufacturing industry is well respected. Just think of Taylor-made, Calloway, and Titlist golf clubs, which are all made in China (I’d fight anyone to keep my Burner Driver). The bottom line is the Chinese are serious coal miners and produce excellent equipment. More and more companies, including Joy and Bucyrus are working with the Chinese market both buying and selling mining equipment and technology. Perhaps you should take a closer look at the possibilities.
In a recent article titled P.L. “Judge” McWhorter: West Virginia’s Most Experienced China Hand published in the September 2008 issue of
Coal People, the author, Judge McWhorter, who has made over 30 trips to China to work with their coal industry, writes, “China mines about twice as much coal as we do [in the USA] and 95% of it is underground.” Judge continues, “About half of ours is underground. So their underground operations are about four times the size of ours.” Judge says that longwall mining is the predominant mining method in China. Continuous mining is only used for longwall development. Ellton Longwall has been impressed with the quality of Chinese mining products.
Mark Newton, Ellton Longwall Managing Director, says, "Mining so much underground coal has given the Chinese the opportunity to become some of the most experienced longwall operators in the world.” This is evident in the quick acceptance of Parsons Chain in the Australian mines that have tried it. The quality of the Chinese product is even higher than the original English-made Parsons Mining Chain. Click here to read “Ellton ups standards for China Chain Manufacture.”
We focus on just-in-time delivery, so we keep warehousing to a minimum to save you money. Parsons Chain and Ellton Longwall maintain operation facilities and warehousing near Sydney, Australia as part of the Ellton Group which employs over 30 people. Initially warehousing in the USA will be minimal relying on fast air and surface shipping that is available in this modern era. Delivery is handled by DHL Global, Pacific Global Logistics, or China Direct depending on which option is most timely and cost effective.
The Parsons Chain facility in China employs hundreds of people and keeps substantial quantities of mining and industrial chain on hand to meet the continued demands of the several hundred longwall mines they serve in China. This includes the larger AFC mining chain in the 38-, 42-, and 48-mm sizes in all three grades: COR-X, XTRA, and DIN Standard.
